Pollution fog formation

چکیده
We have studied the effect of gaseous pollutants on fog droplet growth in heavily polluted air using a model that describes time-dependent sulfate production in the liquid phase and thermodynamical equilibrium between the droplets and the gas phase. Our research indicates that the oxidation of SO 2 to sulfate has a significant effect on fog 5 droplet growth especially when hygroscopic trace gases, for example HNO 3 and NH 3 are present. The increased sulfate production by dissolution of hygroscopic gases results from increased pH (caused by absorption of ammonia) and from the increased size of the fog/smog droplets. As a result of the enhancement of the droplet growth the optical thickness of the fog will increase.

Visibility Degradation during Foggy Period due to Anthropogenic Urban Aerosol at Delhi, India
Fog frequencies dominate in urban area than rural area. Increased air pollution in urban area may lead to the atmospheric reactions, resulting into the formation of secondary pollutants similar to cloud condensation processes. Northern regions of India experience severe fog conditions during the winter period (November-January) each year. In this study, simultaneous measurements of particulate ...
متن کاملThe Relationship of PM Variation to Visibility and Mixing Layer Height under Haze/Fog Condition in Multi-Cities of Northeast China
The variations of visibility, PM mass concentration and mixing layer height (MLH) at four major urban-industry regions (Shenyang, Anshan, Benxi and Fushun) in multi-cities of central Liaoning over northeast China were evaluated from 2009-2012 to characterize the dynamics effect on air pollution. The annual mean visibilities were about 13.7±7.8km, 13.5±6.5km, 12.8±6.1km and 11.5±6.8km in Shenyan...
متن کاملEvaluating threats to an endangered species by proxy: air pollution as threat to the blue swallow (Hirundo atrocaerulea) in South Africa.
BACKGROUND, AIM, AND SCOPE The blue swallow (Hirundo atrocaerulea) is one of the most threatened bird species in southern Africa. Among terrestrial birds, its plumage is known to be the most water repellent, an adaptation to foraging on the wing in dense fog. Despite this unique adaptation, the nesting success of the blue swallow at the Blue Swallow Natural Heritage Site (BSNHS) is lower during...
متن کاملStudy on an Air Quality Evaluation Model for Beijing City Under Haze-Fog Pollution Based on New Ambient Air Quality Standards
Since 2012, China has been facing haze-fog weather conditions, and haze-fog pollution and PM2.5 have become hot topics. It is very necessary to evaluate and analyze the ecological status of the air environment of China, which is of great significance for environmental protection measures. In this study the current situation of haze-fog pollution in China was analyzed first, and the new Ambient ...
متن کاملA Study of the Connection between Electromagnetic Smog, Aerosol Pollution and Cloud Formation
Some important discrepancies in weather forecast for urban area during frontal zones’ transitional periods are constantly observed, when air pollution is combined with electromagnetic smog. Often the days’ lasting phenomenon is due to an unstable phase in humidity transition, which is generated by electromagnetic smog stimulation of anthropogenic aerosol aggregation. This result is a fog-like c...
